Vyacheslav Akhunov’s Five Decade Career Is a Case Study in Quiet Resistance

As part of Uzbekistan’s participation in the 2026 Venice Biennale, a dedicated presentation of works by Vyacheslav Akhunov is featured within the national programme alongside The Aural Sea. The project is presented as a parallel strand, highlighting one of Central Asia’s most significant conceptual artists and his long-term engagement with drawing, text and visual systems.

Akhunov’s practice, developed over several decades, is rooted in the exploration of language as a visual and structural element. His works often combine handwritten text, repetition and abstract forms, creating layered compositions that invite close reading and reflection. Rather than following a linear narrative, his practice operates through accumulation, association and subtle variation.

The exhibition brings together works spanning different periods of his career, revealing how his visual language has evolved while maintaining a consistent focus on perception, meaning and interpretation. The presentation encourages viewers to engage slowly with the works, allowing connections between image, text and space to emerge over time.

Positioned within the Venice Biennale, the project reaffirms Akhunov’s role as a key figure in contemporary Uzbek art and highlights the importance of his intellectual and visual investigations on an international stage.
